Ο Αλιάκμονας είναι ένα πολύ σημαντικό ποτάμι για την χώρα μας, καθώς αποτελεί το μεγαλύτερο που βρίσκεται εξολοκλήρου και πηγάζει από αυτήν. Στον νομό Ημαθίας, μεταξύ του Βερμίου και των Πιέριων όρων σχηματίζονται τα λεγόμενα "Στενά του Αλιάκμονα". Η περιοχή είναι πολύ σημαντική για την πανίδα της, γιαυτό συγκεταλέγεται στο Δίκτυο Natura 2000, αλλά και στις Σημαντικές Περιοχές για τα Πουλιά.

Aliakmonas is a very important river for Greece, because it is the biggest river that fully belongs and springs from our country. In the prefecture of Imathia and between the mt Vermio and Pieria mountains it forms the "Aliakmonas Gorge" area. This area is of major importance because of its Fauna, and is thus contained in the Natura 2000 network and in the Important Bird Areas.
